Neurophysiology

Neurophysiology diagnostics use tests to measure and analyze the electrical activity of the nervous system to diagnose disorders. Common tests include electroencephalography (EEG) for brain activity, evoked potentials (EPs) which measure brain responses to stimuli, and electromyography (EMG) with nerve conduction studies (NCS) for peripheral nerve and muscle function. These diagnostics help identify conditions like epilepsy, nerve damage, and muscle diseases.

Neurophysiology Scope of Services:

Common neurophysiological diagnostic tests

  • Electroencephalography (EEG): Records the brain’s electrical activity from electrodes placed on the scalp to help diagnose epilepsy, brain tumors, and other brain disorders. Patients may be asked to hyperventilate or be exposed to flashing lights during the test.
  • Evoked Potentials (EPs): Measure the brain’s electrical response to specific stimuli.
    • Visual Evoked Potential (VEP): Uses a checkerboard pattern or flashing light to assess the visual pathway.
    • Somatosensory Evoked Potential (SSEP): Delivers sensory stimuli to the arms or legs to check the integrity of nerve pathways to the brain.
    • Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential (BAEP): Uses clicking sounds through headphones to evaluate the auditory pathway.
  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS): Evaluates the function of peripheral nerves by placing electrodes on the skin and sending small electrical pulses to stimulate the nerve.
  • Electromyography (EMG): Assesses the electrical activity of muscles by inserting a small needle electrode into the muscle. Recordings are taken while the muscle is both at rest and when it is tensed.

What they diagnose

  • Neurological disorders: Such as epilepsy, movement disorders, and headaches.
  • Peripheral nerve disorders: Including carpal tunnel syndrome and radiculopathy.
  • Muscle diseases: Such as muscular dystrophy and myasthenia gravis.
  • Brain damage or other issues affecting the brain’s electrical pathways.
